SFOG is a specialty association for 2400 Swedish gynecologists and obstetricians within the Swedish Medical Association. It is and the oldest section of the Swedish Society of Medicine, founded in 1808. It is also a coordinating organization for the country's regional gynecological societies.
SFOG has 20 executive- and reference groups, (ARG) that monitor developments in their respective areas of specialty. These national working executive groups produce reports with latest the findings and recommendations, as well as national councils and guidelines in their fields. The reports are written in Swedish. Within SFOG there are also the following interest groups: maternal health consultants, private gynecologists, outpatient gynecologists and OGU (Obstetricians and Gynecologists in specialist training).
The association handles the education in obstetrics and gynecology, the arrangement and coordination specialist training, the specialist exam, continuous medical education for finished specialists. Every late summer, a national meeting week (SFOG-veckan) is arranged with scientific symposia, talks, poster exhibitions and social activities.
